Lot No. 574 V

1969 Ford Escort Twin Cam

1969 Ford Escort Twin Cam - Classic Cars

Exceptionally well-preserved specimen without racing history!

Delivered to Germany with original cardboard registration document!

Registered until 1979; only 3 owners!

In 1967, the Ford motor sports department drew on a pre-series prototype of the Escort and planted the good parts from the Cortina into the new, actually quite simple car with its dog bone face. By doing so, this power version with Lotus twin cam engine was included in the early Escort production programme, more or less replacing the somewhat sedate - because heavy - Cortina Lotus Mk 2, even if it continued to feature in the price list. The 1,558 cc, 106 hp engine accelerated the unspectacular saloon on a par with the later GTRI class. Less weight and lots of power were the defining principles. The only additional features to create the ultimate lateral accelerator were a slightly reinforced body, flared fenders and an upgrade to the chassis and brakes. Rally pilots took each of the bends at a drift, navigating the vehicle largely by peering out the side windows.

This two-tone Escort is an original left-hand drive, first delivered to Germany and only registered until 1979. It had just three documented owners during this period! It was denied the privilege of taking part in races - or spared the fate, depending on the perspective. After deregistration in 1979, it was mothballed in a dry garage, where it was left protected for decades. Never involved in an accident and entirely without welding, the twin cam is largely in its original condition. The ice-blasted underbody without coating reveals the excellently preserved substance. The consignor also confirms the 78,000 kilometres registered on the clock. He had the engine entirely overhauled, including new pistons and bearings. The gearbox and brakes were also refurbished. The modifications fitted to the Escort have always been there, for instance the broader fenders in original steel design as well as the original three-part BBS rims in 13”. In contrast, naturally, the 235 tyres are new. Presented in this way, it is difficult to hide the wolf in sheep’s clothing. The game will be up, at the latest when you unleash the engine. But why hide it anyway? This rare Escort with its sensational history has no need to conceal the fact that it is a joy to drive!
