Renault presented the R 4 as an affordable vehicle with a modern look at the International Motor Show 1961.

The revolutionary features it brought together like a fifth door, front-wheel drive or maintenance-free operation made the R4 a media star. But judging it to be ugly, the German motor press predicted a commercial disaster. Nevertheless, the non-conformant ride quickly became the transport of choice for intellectuals, alternatives or simply for practically-minded people. It is worth noting that the ugly duckling sold over 8 million units in its various incarnations until 1992.

This R 4 is the luxury model GTL in its later design. The protective side panelling is indicative of the first factor, while the blue-patterned upholstery and the modern instrument holder prove the latter. But what makes the GTL particularly fascinating is the 1,108 cc “throttle engine”. Renault adhered to the philosophy that a large, hiughly compressed engine with a small carburettor offering the same horsepower would be particularly economical. This philosophy proved entirely accurate, as shown impressively by fuel consumption of less than 6 litres/100 km. This GTL has evidently been refurbished and is now resplendent with a beautiful exterior that sets it clearly apart from the usual fare. R 4 are now rare, catch the eye out on the roads and are certain to attract plenty of friendly comments from passers-by. A good vibes vehicle of the more modest kind!
