Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller
(Vienna 1793–1865) Portrait of Banker August Walter (according to family tradition), signed and dated Waldmüller 1834, oil on panel, 36 x 30 cm, framed, minor cracking on lower left edge, (Rei)
Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller
began as a painter of miniatures, learning and perfecting his skills of close observation and detailed accuracy. Throughout his life Waldmüller felt compelled to paint portraits, and without doubt his most significant works - along with his landscape depictions - are of this genre. It was the painter’s fundamental intention to represent the model as true to life as possible and to be correct in every detail. (Sabine Grabner, Mehr als Biedermeier, Klassizismus, Romantik und Realismus in der Österreichischen Galerie, Belvedere, Vienna-Munich 2006, p. 100).
