Lot No. 195

Johann Baptist Reiter

(Urfahr 1813–1890 Vienna) The Contented Guest, signed J. B. Reiter, oil on canvas, 49 x 62 cm, unframed, minor damage to edges, (Rei)

Compare: Bilder des Lebens, Johann Baptist Reiter und der Realismus des 19. Jahrhunderts, Linz 1990, exhibition catalogue, p.65, no. 191b. 647th Art Auction, Dorotheum, 19th - 27th March 1985, no. 506, plate. XXXIV. This work is a larger version of the genre painting in the state museum of Upper Austria. At a table in a tavern a man is sitting comfortably, leaning back and with his legs crossed. He wears a light suit and dark waistcoat, red cravat and a top hat. His left hand, holding a cigar, is lent on the arm of the chair, whilst with his right he raises a full glass. In contrast to the version hanging in Linz, our picture lacks the waitress with the full plate in her right hand who opens the door and enters. Our gaze is thus focused entirely on the drinker who is therefore more directly oriented towards the observer and cheerfully raises his glass to us. The title of the painting “The Contented Guest” is probably not authentic.
