Letter of authentication: Professor Dr Rupert Feuchtmüller, Vienna 1979. Provenance: Auction Koller, Zürich, June 1978, lot 5189; Private German collection. The letter of authentication states: “The nature study here...is, in my opinion, an original work by this Austrian animal and landscape painter who lived from 1807 to 1862. The scenic atmosphere and superimposed images indicate a date during the middle of his artistic career. The study may have been painted in 1840 on the artist’s return from Munich. See the letter dated 19th July 1840 from Berchtesgaden in my book on Gauermann, published Vienna 1962...”.
