(Vienna 1812–1905) View of St.Charles’s Church and the Polytechnic Institute, signed and dated R. v. Alt 1831, watercolour on paper, 25 x 35 cm, Passepartout, framed, (Hu)

Provenance: Private Viennese property; Exhibited: Rudolf von Alt, 437th Albertina exhibition, Wien 2005, cat. no.28, ill. p. 99; Am Puls der Stadt, 2000 Jahre Karlsplatz, Wien Museum, 2008, cat. no. 16.5.13, illustration cat. p. 350.; Professor Walter Koschatzky writes in his letter of authentication dated: 27th May 1990: ...”one of Rudolf von Alt’s most beautiful early works,...truly masterful...”. This was the first of Rudolf von Alt’s watercolours of the Karlsplatz and was painted for the 1832 collection of views of Vienna published by Mansfeld and Company, entitled Wiens Plätze und Umgebung nach der Natur gezeichnet von Rudolf Alt. Further sheets from the series are owned by the state museum of Upper Austria (Vienna’s Graben), the Raiffeisen Bank AG (the Josefsplatz in Vienna) and the imperial hunting castle at Mürzsteg (St.Stephan’s Cathedral). The portfolio with its 12 lithographies of views was prepared by Jacob Alt in 1832 for the Versammlung Naturforscher Deutschlands , a congress established by Archduke Johann. “Here Alt shows an intimate, park-like detail of the area surrounding today’s Karlsplatz: the view of a “clearing” with walkers and people resting on the grass in the place where today’s Musikverein stands, over the wooded banks of the river Wien.... (Elke Doppler, Wien Museum). “... Rudolf von Alt understands how to combine the diverse range of elements in these cityscapes into a harmonic, lively and compact scene.” (Marie Luise Sternath, Albertina)
