Literature: Published by Veronika Birke, Josef Danhauser (1805–1845) Gemälde und Zeichnungen, Wien 1983, p .105f. Provenance: Prince Friedrich of Liechtenstein, Vienna (1877); Martha Schaub, Vienna (1897); Elisabeth Countess Eterde, Vienna (to 1925); 281st Art Auction, C. J. Wawra, Vienna, 21st October 1925ff, no. 43, plate VIII; Private Viennese property ; This painting is “The Gottscheer Boy” as described on page 106 of Dr Veronika Birke’s book and was previously believed to be lost. A drawing dated 1843 is the precursor to this work which was painted in 1844. A study for the painting also hangs in the state museum of Upper Austria, and an etching of the scene, also executed in 1844, is owned by the Albertina.
