Provenance: Old Viennese family property; The authenticity of this painting has been confirmed by Gianni Caffiero, based on a photograph of the work. This small painting impresses with the perfection of the composition and the outstanding quality of the execution. The focal point of the painting is in the foreground, where the waves, illuminated by the piercing ray of light, demonstrate this important maritime painter’s unique talent. Aivazovsky painted small format works throughout his creative lifetime. However, the work’s consummate execution and miniature-like format suggest that it was painted during the 1850’s.
