Gerard Jozef Portielje: The artist received his initial education from his father, the painter Jan Frederik Portielje. Later he studied with Van Lerius and P. Beaufaux at the Antwerp Academy. It was his genre scenes, as well as his portraits and battle scenes, characterised by the precision of their execution, which were most popular. Portielje exhibited together with his brother Edouard in Antwerp in 1893.
