Provenance: Private Viennese property. Petrus van Schendel: Schendel started his artistic studies in Amsterdam before attending the academy in Antwerp where he was taught by van Bree. After working independently in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, he settled in Brussels in 1850. His genre paintings of street scenes, illuminated by candle light and the moon, were much applauded.
