Literature: Christian Lefebvre, Alfred Stevens 1823–1906, Brame & Lorenceau Editions 2006, p.60, ill.53. Provenance: Collection F. Vander Donckt, Sainte-Adresse, France; Collection Emile Clarembaux, Brussels; Galerie Le Roy, Brussels, sold 23rd March 1911; no.44; Galerie Girard, Paris; Collection Peeters, Olne, Belgium; Collection de Kerchove de Denterghem de Pinto; Alfred Stevens: The artist was a genre, landscape and portrait painter. He studied in Brussels with Francois-Joseph Navez, and in Paris with Camille Roqueplan. From 1857 onwards he dedicated his paintings almost exclusively to the portrayal of sophisticated ladies in their luxurious surroundings. His portraits of women influenced the social culture of the era of Napoleon III.
