Empress Maria Leopoldina of Brazil was born in Vienna in 1797, the daughter of Emperor Francis I. and his second wife, Princess Maria Theresa of Naples and Sicily. Maria Leopoldina married Dom Pedro (1798–1834), the Crown Prince of Brazil in 1817 and was crowned Empress consort in 1822. Empress Leopoldina died in 1826 after the birth of her sixth child and was laid to rest in the mausoleum at the Ipiranga memorial in Sao Paulo.
