We are grateful to Jeroen Kapelle, RKD - Netherlands Institute for Art for the scientific assistance.

Jan Michiel Ruyten (Ruijten) focused mainly on city and genre views, occasionally painting landscapes. He completed his artistic training at the academy in Antwerp and around 1870 he settled in The Hague. After successful exhibitions in Belgium, he found international success in London and Vienna.
In this lot, the Belgian painter shows us a scene in front of his home town of Antwerp. In the foreground a woman in a traditional hat is sitting on her richly laden donkey and in the distance the tower of the Cathedral of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal) can be seen. A romanticising tendency is noticeable in this painting, and its orientation towards 17th century Dutch painting.
