The present painting constitutes a rare example of secular painting by the Lombardy artist Giuseppe Danedi, elder brother of the more famous Giovanni Stefano and author of the pendant of this painting (see lot 394). This canvas is a rather significant example of the painter’s work, which has yet to be identified for the most part.
In the present painting, the sensual yet delicate face of Venus is reminiscent of that of Mary in the Annunciation, painted by the artist between 1644 and 1649 for a chapel in the church of San Sebastiano in Milan, where it is still kept (see O.
