Lotto No. 36

Attributed to Jacob Jordaens

Attributed to Jacob Jordaens - Dipinti antichi

(Antwerp 1593–1678)
Saint Paul,
oil on canvas, 79 x 68 cm, framed

The present painting has, until now, not been published. On stylistic grounds, it can be assigned to Jordaens’s mature period. The head of Saint Paul can be compared to the head of Moses in the painting Moses and the Ethiopian Woman from circa 1650 in the Rubenshuis, Antwerp (see fig. 1).

With his depictions of the apostles inspired by contemporary Roman painting, Rubens had established a new pictorial type. Both Van Dyck and Jordaens clearly borrowed from Rubens’s apostles. However, those by Jordaens have hitherto been neglected by art historical research. D’Hulst dates a series of four paintings, each of which shows three figures in three-quarter-length, to the period around 1630, but believes to recognise in them the participation of the workshop (now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille). Further pictures of the apostles – those of Saints Peter and Paul – were formerly installed in the Church of Our Lady of Leliendael in Malines (see R. d’Hulst, Jacob Jordaens, London 1982, p. 97).
