(Wuppertal-Elberfeld 1904-1981 St. Veit im Jauntal, Carinthia) "Vom Baum fressendes Pferd" (Horse eating from tree), 1933, woodcut, signed Werner Berg, titled, dedicatory inscription "To 15.3.1957 G. K.", one from an edition of 12, block size 37 x 29.5 cm, sheet size 61 x 47 cm, minor damage, Biller 35, (EW)
“The significance of another fundamental stylistic problem in the analysis of presentations of small figures, that of space and image surface, is made particularly clear in the 1933 print of Vom Baum fressendes Pferd. Together with the tree, the horse with its sharply shortened perspective constitutes the foremost image plane. Set against the background of the mountain chain and a spruce, the middle ground is occupied by a male figure. Depicted as areas of black, the tree, horse, mountain and man are all completely equal.”
