The present painting relates to a drawing which was sold in Paris (sale Tajan Paris, 19th May 2009, lot 21, as Lazzaro Baldi). The painting could be part of a series of the story of Alexander the Great.
The subject is drawn from the Greek historian Cleitarchus of Alexandria (4th century B.C.). The Persian King Darius III received a crushing defeat at the hands of Alexander the Great and fled, wounded. His family were captured by Alexander. He is shown here outside his tent on the battlefield, displaying clemency by sparing the mother, wives and daughters of Darius. The subject was often treated as an example of good government.
