Jan Tricius (also Tretko or Tricjust) studied with Jacob Jordaens in Antwerp, Nicolas Possin in Paris (1640-42) and Gdansk, all cited in the privilege granted to him by Kong John III Sobieski on the artist’s appointment as court painter in Cracow (see: Jan K. Ostrowski, ‘Mechanisms of Contact between Polish and European Baroque’, in Land of the Winged Horsemen: Art in Poland, 1572-1764, Yale 1999, p. 63).
We are grateful to Zoltan Kovacs of the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, for suggesting both the attribution and the identity of the sitter.
