Friedrich Georg Weitsch was court painter to Charles William Duke of Brunswick and became director of the Berlin Academy in 1798. Whilst he is best known for his portraits, among them the famous portrait of Alexander von Humboldt (today Berlin, Alte Nationalgalerie), he also painted a small number of neoclassical landscapes.
