Lodewijk van Ludick

This is one among few signed works by this artist, who was rediscovered only a short while ago. Ludick’s father, after whom the son was named, was a close friend of Rembrandt’s. Little is known about the young artist’s training. He must have worked independently at a very early stage of his career, for a landscape painting by his hand was mentioned in the inventory of the art dealer Van Meldert as early as 1653. He painted Italianate landscapes in the style of Jan Both and Jan Asselijn. It remains unclear whether he travelled to Italy himself. It is surprising that information about his life is so scarce, as his paintings are preserved in many important collections, a sign that his art was highly recognised. Works by Ludick are in the Bavarian State Paintings Collection and in the National Gallery of Prague.
