Provenance:

Antonio Calza is considered a leading exponent of Baroque battle painting. A successful specialist in his genre, he worked in Bologna, Venice, Milan, Rome, and Florence and between 1712 and 1716 was in the service of Prince Eugene of Savoy in Vienna. In Calza’s works, which like those of other seventeenth-century “battaglisti” (battle painters) that harked back to the art of Jacques Courtois, the impact of Salvator Rosa is particularly obvious.
