Theobald Michau
(Tournai 1676–1765 Antwerp)
A village Kermesse,
signed lower left: Michaut i f,
oil on panel, 19.5 x 27 cm, framed
Theobald Michau first trained with Lucas Achtschellinck as a specialist in tapestry cartoons. He became one of the finest 18th century exponents of the style of the Brueghel dynasty, which was as popular in the 18th century as it is with modern day collectors. His works in a highly detailed, colorful, almost anachronistic style met the high demand of contemporary, notably French, collectors for such works. He depicts modest peasant scenes and his characters, somewhat squat and sketched with vigour, show the influence of Teniers. The freshness and delicacy of a soft range of colors combine well with the strong tints of the green foliage covering the rocks, together with the hazy impression of his backgrounds, are hallmarks of his style. In 1710 Michau was appointed Master of the Antwerp Guild. Today his works can be found worldwide in private and public collections, including in museums in Antwerp, Dresden, Bergamo, Bremen, Caen, Budapest, Madrid and Vienna.
