We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, for confirming the present painting to be an autograph work by Pieter van Roestraten.
In Lexikon der Holländischen Stilllebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert, the entry on Roestraten’s paintings reads as follows: “Those exotic and rare treasures portrayed in Van Roestraten’s paintings simultaneously emphasise the delicate preciousness inherent to the artist’s style. Similar to a piece of jewellery, each and every object is highlighted against the dark backdrop. Such pictorial mise-en-scéne is helped by an effective treatment of light and shadow […]”.
