Saint James the Greater,
oil on panel, 62.5 x 48 cm, framed
This picture, depicting the Apostle James the Greater, provides yet further evidence of the early popularity of Van Dyck’s Apostle Series, which were executed during his early career in Antwerp. They are modelled on Rubens’ Apostolado Lerma series, copies of which Rubens kept in his studio.
Two autograph works of Saint James the Greater by Anthony van Dyck are known; see S.J. Barnes, N. de Poorter, O. Millar, H. Vey, Van Dyck, A complete catalogue of the paintings, New Haven/ London, 2004, p. 72, no. I.54 and p. 79, no. I.75.
The present composition bears fragments of the original panel attached to the reverse, bearing the castle and the hands of Antwerp together with the panelmaker’s mark of Guilliam Aertssen, active 1612–1626. Aertssen’s mark also appears on three panels of apostles by Van Dyck in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden.
