A reduced version of this composition (84.3 x 115.3 cm) was sold by Fischer, Lucerne, 17th June 2015, lot 1035. Frans Wouters was a student of Pieter van Avont and Peter Paul Rubens. In 1634 he became a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke. Later he worked with Sir Anthony van Dyck in London and with Pieter van Avont in Antwerp. He specialised in landscapes populated by mythological and biblical figures.
