German master of the early 18th century
The Pipe Smoker, oil on canvas, 95 x 78,5 cm, framed (GS)
This painting, hitherto attributed to Johann Kupezky, is possibly identical to the "Mann with Pfeife" from the collection of Count Apponyi, Schloss Lengyeli (auctioned in 1934 at the Post Saving Bank in Budapest, lot 120). Its counterpart, "Mann with Pelzhut", is in the Szépmüvészeti Museum in Budapest (inv. no. 53440).
We thank Zdenek Kazlepka, Brno, for his suggestion re these two paintings.
