Portrait of Maria Anna of Austria, Queen of Spain as a widow,

The present painting is a portrait of Mariana (Maria Anna) of Austria (Wiener Neustadt 1634 –1696 Madrid), the Queen consort of Spain, who was the second wife of King Philip IV, who was also her maternal uncle. As the daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III, Maria Anna’s destiny was to continue the matrimonial policy between the Spanish and the Austrian branches of the Habsburg family. When Philip IV died in 1665 Mariana became the regent of Spain and as her only surviving son, Charles, was three years old she ruled Spain until 1669.
The present painting can be compared to a portrait of the Queen of circa 1687 by Claudio Coello in the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle in Newgate, County Durham.
