Ludwig Hofmann studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden from 1883 onwards. Then he was enrolled at the art academy of Karlsruhe and was pupil of Ferdinand Keller. Subsequently he went to Paris with the recommendation of Volz after he had briefly sojourned in Munich. In Paris he went to the Académie Julian and received strong influences by the works of Puvis de Chavannes und Paul-Albert Besnard. From 1890 on Hofmann was a freelance artist in Berlin. He belonged to a group called "Gruppe der Elf" (group of eleven - with Max Klinger, Max Liebermann, a. o.). During his sojourn in Munich in 1892 he was influenced by the work of Hans von Marées. From 1894 to 1900 Hofmann travelled a lot and spent the most time of his life in Rome and in his villa near Fiesole. Throughout his life Hofmann’s work was decisively influenced by the reception of antiquity and its imagination of ancient arcadia.
