Arion Riding a Dolphin,
inscribed in the lyre: Rosa,
oil on canvas, 131 x 109.5 cm, framed
Provenance:
private collection, Germany
The present painting is related to Salvator Rosas’s Arion from a private collection (see C. Volpi, Salvator Rosa, Rome, 2014, p. 470, no. 149). The painting represents the Greek poet and singer Arion. Legend has it that he was kidnapped by sailors during a voyage, when he, showered with riches, was on his way home after a singing contest from which he had emerged victorious. He was granted a last wish, which was to sing a song. One of the dolphins that had been lured by his music took him on its back and carried him to the shore.
