Lotto No. 331 #

Heinrich Friedrich Füger

Heinrich Friedrich Füger - Dipinti antichi

(Heilbronn 1751–1818 Vienna)
Eurydice drawn back into the Underworld
oil on canvas, 56 x 69 cm, framed

We are grateful to Robert Keil for confirming the attribution after examining the present work in the original.

The present painting by Füger is devoted to the subject of Orpheus before Pluto and Proserpina that is almost identical in size (see R. Keil, Heinrich Friedrich Füger, Vienna, 2009, p. 342, no. 450). As Füger frequently conceived thematically related paintings as pendants, the present painting might have been the former’s companion and would therefore date from around 1800-1801.

Several years later, Füger presented two designs for the curtain of the Kärntnertor Theatre at the Vienna Hofburg. One of these designs depicted the Muses of Tragedy and Comedy, while the other showed Eurydice Drawn Back into the Underworld (see R. Keil, op. cit., nos. 536 and 537, now Residenzgalerie, Salzburg). There the group of figures shows the same composition as in the painting dating from 1800-1801. However, several architectural elements were added on the left which transfer the scene to some dark interior.
