The castle that appears near the right edge also appears in a painting by Griffier sold at Christie’s, London, 13 December 199 lot 1. Walther Bernt writes about Jan Griffier I: ‘His generally small-scale Rhine and Moselle landscapes in the manner of Herman Saftleven’s late period are most frequent: river valleys enclosed by looming mountain ranges and populated by buildings, numerous ships, and small, somewhat rigidly drawn figures. Most of the time, the painter’s vantage point is located high above the valley […]’.
