Pieter van Bredael

Pieter van Bredael - Dipinti antichi

(Antwerp 1629–1719)
The market square of a town
oil on canvas, 65.6 x 103.4 cm, framed

Pieter van Bredael, who was part of a large family of painters, is recorded as being a student in the workshop of David Ryckaert III in 1640. Following study trips to the Netherlands and Spain, he became a master in the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp in 1651. He was well known for his highly imaginative market scenes illustrating the diversified spectrum of every day town life. In the present painting, merchants offer clothes, textiles, and precious objects for sale, while a painter has put up a stall in a prominent place in order to exhibit his flower still lifes, landscapes, and pictures of saints.

Bredael was usually influenced by Italian architectural model types, however the present painting is one of the rare examples in which the square is located in the artist’s native country. Only the market column in the centre of the square and the loggia near the left margin, crowned by a statue of Hercules fighting with the Nemean Lion, are inspired by antiquity.
