![Workshop of Peter Paul Rubens - Dipinti antichi Workshop of Peter Paul Rubens - Dipinti antichi](/fileadmin/lot-images/38A151020/normal/peter-paul-rubens-werkstatt-2331388.jpg)
(Siegen 1577–1640 Antwerp)
Study of a putto
oil on canvas, 50 x 42 cm, framed
Provenance:
According to the lacquer seal on the reverse side dated 1741, the painting was formerly in the collection of the Electors of Saxony.
Literature:
H. Vlieghe/H. Devisscher, Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard, part V-1, Turnhout 2014, p. 47, no. 7
We are grateful to Hans Vlieghe for confirming that this study might have been painted in Rubens’ workshop. As is frequently the case with studies executed by students under the master’s supervision, the present painting is a variation on a composition originally used in another product by Rubens’ workshop: the figure corresponds to the central angel in a group of three in a Birth of Christ in an English private collection – a painting Hans Vlieghe considers to have been composed by Rubens, but which he thinks was largely executed by workshop collaborators (see H. Vlieghe/H. Devisscher, Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard, part V-1, The Life of Christ before the Passion, The Youth of Christ, 2014, pp. 46–48).
