A Youth caught drinking by an elderly Woman

The present composition is stylistically close to the work of Tommaso Salini, called Mao (Rome circa 1575–1625), and can be compared to a Young Peasant with a Flask of circa 1610 in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid (inv. nr. 363).
The artistic personality of Tommaso Salini has been little studied until recently and he was best known as a witness in the lawsuit of 1603 that was brought by his friend and biographer, Giovanni Baglione, against Caravaggio. Baglione may indeed have been his teacher and is one of the sources of information on his life.
The influence of Caravaggio is evident in the present painting, both in the lighting and in the figure type, which recall those found in Caravaggio’s earliest genre paintings.
