Eloi Noel Bouvard and Marc Aldine are both pseudonyms of the French painter Eloi Noel Beraud. Beraud studied architecture at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris before working in the city’s architectural department. After travelling to Venice in the 1930s he dedicated himself to painting la Serenissima with which he had fallen in love. There he met Rubens Santoro and Felix Ziem who both influenced his style. The present work, with its calm waters, romantic atmosphere and beautifully warm light, is typical of the artist’s oeuvre.
