Austria, 2013/16, coated steel frame, red leather, Wittmann upholstery, height approx. 40 cm, diameter approx. 120 cm. (DRAX)

Lit.:
bretterbauer objects, Vienna 2014, pp. 55ff, ill. p. 63.
“Like Gilbert Bretterbauer’s rug works, “seat” is part of a play with surfaces, planes, and spaces. The artist’s thoughts have finally freed themselves of the illusion of a neutral space. Pieces of furniture, even if only seen as functional objects, are subject to a compartmentalisation that does not understand the life of a space, merely disciplining it at best. Bretterbauer’s objects gain ground, not without further reflection and only for their own beauty. The interaction between construction and surroundings define the place that belongs to them. “seat” has grown from this approach: objects generated from circular patterns, they rise as furniture but can also stand their ground as functional works of art.”
