A giant “Double Gambit” chess set, - Design First

designed by Boisgontier & Arman, 1986, the chess board composed of black and white marble tiles, with 32 bronze chessmen, chess board: approx. 244 x 244 cm, pieces: between height approx. 26 cm, width approx. 19 cm, depth approx. 10 cm and height approx. 52 cm, width approx. 21 cm, depth approx. 28 cm. From the limited edition of 5 + 2 A. P. The present lot is A. P. 1/2. With original certificate of authenticity issued by George Boisgontier and signed by both artists.

Provenance:
private ownership, France

Arman, the French-American object artist and co-founder of Nouveau Realisme, and the French sculptor George Boisgontier designed this chess set together, with the figures representing abstracted string instruments reduced to their basic geometric shapes. In the sixteen pieces conceived by Arman reflect his passion for the sensual forms of string instruments, which he examined in many of his works. The chess set was also meant to symbolise an allegory of life.
