Lotto No. 165 +

A rare “Pilgrim Bottle” vase, designed by Tomaso Buzi *,

c. 1935, for Venini, Murano, freely blown bottle in “filigrana” glass with small clear glass handles to the sides, incised signature: venini murano made in Italy, height 21 cm. (DRAX)

Only two further examples of this “Pilgrim Bottle”, yet different in their making, are known to date – one in “incamiciato” glass and the other in “alba” glass. Buzzi designed countless innovative shapes for Venini – vases, bowls, and animals – most of which were realised in an equally novel technique of opaque glass combinations. However, he also revived the traditional “filigrana” glass technique of the old Venice school of glassmaking.

Lit.: Tomaso Buzzi alla Venini, Milan 2013, p. 284 (for the form), pp. 343 ff. (for the pattern) – Murano. Vetri della Collezione Olnick Spanu, Milan 2001, p. 88, p. 257 (for the form).

Provenance: from the estate of an important Venini collector based in Milan
