Abraham Brueghel was the most talented and successful son of Jan Brueghel II. He studied with his father and later settled in Rome where he soon made a name as a painter of still lifes. As early as 1649, an inventory of his patron Don Antonio Ruffo mentions nine floral paintings by the eighteen-year old artist. Influenced by his Italian contemporaries Michelangelo Campidoglio and Michelangelo Cerquozz, his work also reveal their northern roots in their tight composition and the precision of the detailing. In 1670 Brueghel moved to Naples, where he spent the rest of his life.
