Ravesteyn is one of the most important proponents of Prague court art under Emperor Rudolf II., shaped by painters such as Hans von Aachen or Bartholomaeus Spranger. The Prague court attracted artists who all worked in Late Mannerist/Early Baroque style. Ravesteyn’s work is characterised by the opulent, elongated, Mannerist forms typical of Rudolphinian painting. The present painting, on a small copper panel, was presumably part of a contemporary collector’s “cabinet of curiosities”.
