The two putti flanking the oval resemble those in the frescoes by Carlo Cignani at the church San Michele in Bosco, Bologna (1665). The putti next to the Archangel Michael, caught in the moment of revealing himself to Gregory the Great, show significant similarities (cf. B. Buscaroli Fabbri, Carlo Cignani, Affreschi, dipinti, disegni, Milan 2004, p 117, No. 96). A preliminary drawing for these frescoes is still in existence (published in Buscaroli Fabbri, op. cit, p 224, No. 100a, present location unknown, formerly Truro Museum, Cornwall).
