This period of Kerckhoven’s œuvre is no longer overshadowed by the early influence of his teacher, the animal painter Jan Fyt, but rather informed by the precise study of individual animals, as is generally the case in the compositions of his middle period. The informal placement of the birds in the landscape are more reminiscent of the Florentine animal painter Bartolomeo Bimbi.
