Lotto No. 222

Alexander Keirincx

Alexander Keirincx - Dipinti antichi

(Antwerp 1600–1652 Amsterdam)
Landscape with trees and figures,
oil on panel, 37 x 48 cm, framed

Provenance:
Dorotheum auction, Vienna, 18th April 2012, Lot 795

We are grateful to Ursula Härting, who inspected the painting in the original. The work comes with written expert report. She suggests Cornelis van Poelenburgh as the painter of the incidental figures. The painting will be included in the catalogue raisonné currently under preparation.

Keirincx trained with Abraham Govaerts, became an independent master in 1618/19 and later worked with Cornelis van Poelenburgh at the English court in London. In the tradition of his teacher, Govaerts, he first specialised in sylvan landscapes before turning to giant trees standing by themselves in a flat landscape. There are numerous examples of his cooperation with figure painters such as Cornelis van Poelenburgh. The prominently placed oak and the colouration date it to the 1640s. A similar drawing of an oak is at the Bremen Kunsthalle (Inv. No. 1219).
