Lotto No. 96 #

Monogrammist ACF - a pair (2)

Monogrammist ACF - a pair (2) - Dipinti antichi

(Italy, 18th Century)
A pair of architectural capricci,
oil on canvas, each 137.7 x 190.2 cm, framed, a pair (2)

Provenance:
European Private Collection

We are grateful to David Marshall, who, based on photographs, has suggested that this pair is by the same hand as a pair of as yet unidentified capricci, apparently bearing the monogram ACF, which Luigi Salerno (I pittori di vedute in Italia, Rome, 1991, p. 55, cat. nos. 18.6, 18.7) identified as works by Alberto Carlieri. Marshall, in his major article on Carlieri, discussed this possibility and decided that these paintings, like the present pair, are most likely not works by Carlieri but appear to be by a different skilled artist who may have used the Monogram ACF (see D. R. Marshall, The Architectural Piece in 1700: The Paintings of Alberto Carlieri (1672 – c. 1720), Pupil of Andrea Pozzo, in: Artibus et Historiae, vol. 25, no. 50 (2004), pp. 39–126, p. 40, ill. 2).
