Wybrand de Geest was the leading Frisian portraitist of his time. Having probably been trained by Abraham Bloemaert, he established himself at Leeuwarden as a painter of individual and group portraits of the Western Frisian nobility and upper middle classes. Stout and solid figures mostly depicted with large, dark eyes are typical of his art. The faces of his sitters are confidently and distinctly characterised. Textiles and such attributes as coats of arms are rendered very carefully.
