Abel Grimmer

Abel Grimmer - Dipinti antichi

(Antwerp 1570–1619)
Winter landscape with woodcutters,
oil on panel, diameter 35 cm, framed

Provenance:
Sale, Dorotheum, Vienna, 24 March 2004, lot 177;
Private collection, Belgium

The present painting is accompanied by a written certificate compiled by Comtesse Reine de Bertier de Sauvigny (January 2004). She wrote that she would include the picture in the forthcoming addendum to her catalogue raisonné of the works of Abel and Jacob Grimmer.

The landscapist Abel Grimmer was a son of Jacob Grimmer, who was also known as a painter of landscapes. In 1592, Abel became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp. For his landscapes, he collaborated with such figure painters as Hendrick van Balen, Frans Francken II, Gillis Mostaert, and Louis de Caullery. Abel Grimmer’s works are based on compositional patterns developed by Pieter Brueghel I and Hans Bol, but they also hark back to his father’s example. Abel Grimmer ran a prominent workshop in Antwerp that reproduced his compositions for export. His favourite subjects included allegories of the Twelve Months and the Tower of Babel.
