Heywood Hardy was the youngest son of landscapist James Hardy. His older brother, James Hardy Jr., also painted. In 1864 he went to Paris to study at the École des Beaux-Arts before settling in London in 1870. In the following years Hardy became known for his sensitive portrayals of animals, developing into a successful artist of renown. He was invited to many country estates to undertake commissions. His etchings and photogravures of animals and landscapes were extremely popular and printed in large numbers during the late 19th century. Hardy was a member of several respected societies.
