(active in Brescia in the 17th century)
Grotesque scene with animals and stylised figures, inscribed „Fama volat che il porco fa l’astrologo“,
oil on canvas, 90 x 120 cm, framed
Provenance:
European Private Collection
The Maestro della Fertilità dell‘Uovo can be seen as a follower of Faustino Bocchi (1659-1742). The mysterious painter active in Brescia bears his name on the basis of the painting, “La fertilità dell‘uovo” (Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, Wisconsin).
His works are characterised by the omission of space and foreshortening. The figures, often portrayed in profile, stand out against the dark, mostly flat backgrounds and seem almost cut out. Animals and dwarves appear together as traders, conducting the same activities as humans.
His paintings are characterised by indefatigable, frantically disorganised actions and reactions as well as a balance between absurd and grotesque elements.
A painting from the same series was auctioned at the Dorotheum on 17 October 2012, lot 820.
