The present painting shows the influence of Poelenburgh in both its composition and style, which according to Roethlisberger suggests a dating to about 1625 (see Literature). The ruins are reminiscent of a Roman city gate, although they are the product of the artist’ imagination. The tree stump on the right border of the picture is a frequent motif in Breenbergh’s paintings from the 1630s.
