Lotto No. 343

Cornelio Brusco

Cornelio Brusco - Dipinti antichi

(documented in Naples 1605–1635)
The Great Flood,
oil on canvas, 115.5 x 156 cm, framed

Provenance:
Probably Cardenas Collection;
European Private Collection

Literature:
La pittura di paesaggio in Italia. Il Seicento, ed. by L. Trezzani, Milan 2004, p. 252.

Cornelio Brusco achieved notoriety in the past few years. His works were previously attributed to Filippo Napoletano and Scipione Compagno, among other reasons because of his name, which is recorded in many different variants. If Cornelio Brusco, whose name can be found in several Neapolitan inventories, is to be identified with the painter Filippo d’Angeli, he must have enjoyed a considerable degree of notoriety in Naples. His favourite subjects were biblical episodes, paradise scenes, the purgatory or Troy, all of which had not yet become widespread in Naples and were, therefore, capable of arousing the interest of his patrons. His works also reveal the influence of Tintoretto, which suggests that he must have spent a period of time in Venice during his journey to the South.
